epilogue has updated its gb operator to include a new feature that detects fake game cartridges. the device now connects to a phone app called retrace, available for both android and ios. this allows users to check if game boy, game boy color, and game boy advance cartridges are authentic before buying or selling them.

for indie developers and game collectors, this means you can potentially avoid counterfeit cartridges that could affect gameplay or resale value. however, early tests show that the detection isn't perfect. some authentic cartridges were misidentified as counterfeit, and a few required multiple scans for accurate detection.

the app provides a confidence percentage for each scan, but results may vary with repeated scans. for the most reliable identification, physical inspection of the cartridge is still recommended. this includes checking for specific codes on the rom chip or the label.

if you plan to use the gb operator for testing cartridges, be prepared for some inaccuracies. consider combining app results with manual checks to ensure authenticity.
